Solutions to the Reproducibility Crisis

Carolyn Capelouto is the project manager for the research group “Incentives and Responsible Research Assessment” at the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité. Her background is in public health and epidemiology, and her current work focuses on translating recommendations for improving research assessment into institutional practice.

Ivan Oransky is co-founder of Retraction Watch and executive director of its parent nonprofit, The Center For Scientific Integrity, as well as a distinguished journalist in residence at New York University’s Arthur Carter Journalism Institute. He also serves as special advisor for scientific publishing at the Simons Foundation, and as editor in chief of The Transmitter.

Ivan previously was president of the Association of Health Care Journalists and vice president of editorial at Medscape. He has also held editorial leadership positions at MedPage Today, Reuters Health, Scientific American and The Scientist.

He has received numerous awards for his work, including the 2015 John P. McGovern Medal for excellence in biomedical communication from the American Medical Writers Association and an honorary doctorate in civil laws from the University of the South (Sewanee) in 2017. In 2025 the Council of Science Editors gave Retraction Watch the Award for Meritorious Achievement, their highest honor.

Monya Baker worked at Nature for more than 15 years. As an editor on the Comment desk, she commissioned articles on diverse efforts to improve science. Her reporting on research robustness includes the 2016 survey “1,500 scientists lift the lid on reproducibility.”

Her work has appeared in The Economist, New Scientist, The Scientist, Wired and other publications. Monya has degrees from Harvard University and Carleton College and is currently a Senior Editor at the science policy magazine Issues in Science and Technology.
